Pakistan has officially launched its first artificial intelligence (AI) avatar, called Laila, as a step towards adoption of advanced technology in public life and the country’s national economy.

The announcement was made at a special event of the government, which was attended by senior policymakers, technology experts and industry leaders.

Addressing the gathering, the Federal Minister for Information and Technology called Laila a “path-breaking initiative” saying it is Pakistan’s serious commitment to building and expanding its Artificial Intelligence sector.

According to the minister, Laila is not just a symbolic or experimental project. The AI avatar has been designed to be useful by helping citizens with educational support, provide help regarding civic services and communicate in multiple languages.

This multilingual and citizenship-oriented design is an attempt to make online services more accessible especially to people who may have barriers to using conventional technology platforms.

The launch event also focused on the government’s overall AI strategy. Under this long term vision, for the year 2030, Pakistan aims to have 100,000 people trained in artificial intelligence skills.

In addition, the strategy also covers funding support for 1,000 AI startups, support for 400 projects on university-based AI projects, and developing 50 sector-specific AI models to be used in various industries.

These goals display the intention of the Government to build a thriving and sustainable AI ecosystem.

Experts feel efforts like Laila could transform technology and economic prospects in Pakistan.

Through the combination of innovation and public service delivery, the project holds significant potential in positioning Pakistan as a regional centre for innovation in Artificial Intelligence and to help increase the access of information and services to the citizens themselves.

Overall, Laila marks a clear indication of moving towards artificial intelligence as a means of power, innovation and inclusive digital movement for all over the country.
