Pakistan secured a long-awaited T20I victory over Australia after seven years in their first T20I match today, as they won the opening match of the three-game series at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The victory gave Pakistan a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Toss
The game began in the afternoon at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat first, a decision that allowed their top order to take advantage of the conditions early on.
Pakistan’s batting effort
Pakistan started its batting aggressively, but could not retain the momentum as Sahibzada Farhan was out on his first ball.
Saim Ayub set the tone through fluent stroke play and was declared the player of the match by scoring the highest (40 runs at 22 balls) in the team. Salman Ali Agha also played a key role at the top, providing stability and momentum.
The Australian bowling attack grew aggressive in the middle overs. Adam Zampa was the standout performer for Australia, claiming four major wickets and slowing Pakistan’s scoring rate.
Xavier Bartlett and Mahli Beardman also contributed with timely breakthroughs, preventing Pakistan from scoring a large target. Despite giving wickets to Australia, Pakistan managed to make a competitive total, supported by impactful contributions from the middle order.
Australia’s chase and Pakistan’s bowling
Australia began their chase positively, with Travis Head attacking the Pakistani bowlers. He could not maintain his momentum as he was caught out at the ball of Saim Ayub. Pakistan’s bowlers responded quickly, pressuring the opposite team with a fierce bowling attack and sharp fielding.
Abrar Ahmed and Mohammad Nawaz were particularly effective in the middle overs, picking up crucial wickets and halting Australia’s momentum.
Shaheen Shah Afridi provided control with the new ball, while Shadab Khan and Nawaz maintained pressure as wickets fell consecutively. Australia struggled to build partnerships and tried really hard to chase the target, but they were unable to recover.
Pakistan’s disciplined bowling performance ensured the victory against the Australian kangaroos, taking a series lead and ending a seven-year wait for a T20I win against Australia.
