In a positive development, Pakistan has completed all legal requirements to finalise a dual nationality arrangement with Germany.
This means Germany will now allow Pakistani origin residents in the country to keep their Pakistani citizenship while also getting a German nationality.
In a public notice, the Pakistan Embassy in Germany has confirmed that it has been added to the list of countries with which Pakistan allows dual nationality.
Before this, people who wanted to apply for German nationality had to give up their Pakistani nationality.
However, after this development, Pakistanis applying for German citizenship will no longer be required to give up their Pakistani nationality.
The embassy also said that details about restoring Pakistani citizenship for those who had previously given it up will be announced soon.
Earlier, Pakistan also approved dual citizenship agreements with 22 countries through the Pakistan Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2024.
The bill was approved by the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Interior.
It was to address long-standing issues faced by overseas Pakistanis who were forced to give up their Pakistani citizenship when getting a foreign nationality.

German authorities check educational credentials before giving work visas.
Applicants must also show German language skills at B2 level or higher. Some may need extra training or equivalency exams.
The bureau does not recruit or license workers for Germany. It also does not charge any fees for advice or guidance.
