Significant progress has been achieved on the Pakistan-Kazakhstan rail connectivity project, a landmark initiative that will directly link Karachi Port with Kazakhstan.
This mega project is set to enhance regional trade integration and provide Pakistan with its first direct rail connection to Central Asia.
Valued at approximately $7 billion, the project is expected to be completed within a record three-year timeframe. Once operational, it is anticipated to be a transformative development for the region and a major milestone in Pakistan’s economic growth.
In this context, a high-level consultation was held at the Ministry of Railways between the Federal Minister for Railways and the Ambassador of Kazakhstan, focusing on regional connectivity and railway cooperation. During the meeting, both sides reviewed rail projects aimed at linking Pakistan with Central Asia and underscored their potential economic and trade benefits.
Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi described the initiative as a historic milestone for Pakistan’s railway sector, noting that it would open new opportunities for trade and regional integration.
It was also stated that the President of Kazakhstan is scheduled to visit Pakistan on 3th February 2026, during which a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be formally signed to further strengthen railway cooperation between the two countries.
The Minister emphasised that the project is not only critical for the modernisation of Pakistan’s railway sector but also instrumental in boosting regional trade ties and creating new avenues for economic development.
