Pakistan Railways sets deadline to outsource 13 major trains

Pakistan Railways has set December 31 as the deadline to outsource 13 express passenger trains. The Pak Business is also included in the list. The move is part of the department’s plan to increase private-sector involvement and improve railway services.
Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi has told officials to complete the advertisement, bidding and contract process by the end of December. Six trains are already being operated commercially by private companies.

Which 13 trains have been planned for outsourcing?

The 13 trains planned for outsourcing are Sandal, Allama Iqbal Express, Faiz Ahmad Faiz, Fareed Express, Sukkur Express, Babu Passenger, Bulleh Shah Passenger, Mohenjodaro Express, Lasani Express, Sialkot Express, Karachi Express, Bahauddin Zakariya Express and Tezgam.

Railway equipment and security measures

The ministry is also working to bring faulty or “dummy” coaches and wagons back into service.
Abbasi directed officials to replace damaged brake cylinders, brake blocks and brake shoes. He also said private suppliers could be blacklisted if they cause delays in providing equipment and materials.
The minister ordered the installation of modern CCTV cameras at railway workshops and yards. He also directed officials to hire private security to prevent theft.
Locomotives being repaired must be returned to service according to the set schedule. Officials found responsible for negligence could also face legal action.

Railway projects face new deadlines

Pakistan Railways is also working to speed up infrastructure projects.
Track renewal work in the Sukkur division has been given a December 31 deadline. Officials estimate that the work could reduce travel time by around 90 minutes.
The flood-damaged Mian Kallar Bridge is expected to be completed within 60 days. The railway bridge between Lahore and Faisalabad was also damaged by recent floods. Its repair is expected to take two months.
