Pakistan Railways considers fare increase after rise in fuel prices

After a sharp increase in petroleum prices, Pakistan Railways has started considering an increase in train fares, according to reports on Friday.

Officials are reviewing a proposal to raise fares by more than 10 per cent because of higher diesel costs.

Railway authorities said diesel prices have increased by Rs55 per litre. This has raised operating costs for the railways.

The railway system uses around 350,000 litres of diesel every day. Due to the price increase, the department now faces an additional daily burden of about Rs19.25 million.

Officials said the higher diesel prices will add around Rs577.5 million to railway expenses every month. A final decision on fare changes has not yet been announced.

Iran, US, Israel situation

At the same time, global oil prices are rising because of the US Israeli conflict with Iran. The disruption in Middle Eastern oil supplies has affected energy markets.

As oil prices increase, China’s electric vehicle industry is taking advantage of the situation.

Reports say that China is in a strong position to meet growing demand and reduce its dependence on oil.

Train services to be suspended

Pakistan Railways has announced that train services in Balochistan will be suspended on March 27.

Railway officials said the suspension is temporary. It is due to technical reasons and repair work on the railway track. The step has been taken to ensure passenger safety.
