Pakistan reaffirms support for Kashmir, increases refugee allowance

Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs, Gilgit-Baltistan and SAFRON Engineer Amir Muqam said on Tuesday that Pakistan will continue to stand with the Kashmiri people until they achieve their right to self-determination. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s political, diplomatic and moral support for Kashmiris at all international forums.

Speaking on Kashmir Solidarity Day, observed on February 5, Muqam announced that the government has increased the monthly subsistence allowance for Jammu and Kashmir refugees of 1989–90 to Rs 5,000 per person.

He said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s decision reflects Pakistan’s strong commitment and solidarity with the Kashmiri people.

Calling the refugees “close to our hearts,” Muqam said their reintegration, rehabilitation and dignified resettlement remain top priorities of the government.

He added that the federal government is working on a Rs 3 billion pilot housing project to build 750 residential houses for Jammu and Kashmir refugees. The government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir has provided public land for the project, while additional land is being acquired through legal procedures due to limited availability.

Muqam said Pakistan considers the full rehabilitation and resettlement of Jammu and Kashmir refugees a national duty as well as a social responsibility.

Earlier, the federal government announced a public holiday for Kashmir Day on February 5, 2026. It will be the first public holiday of 2026.

Kashmir Day is observed by people all across the different provinces of Pakistan as a public holiday every year.

All government, semi government departments, schools, colleges, banks will remain closed on the day.

This day is celebrated in honour of solidarity with the Kashmiri people who have lost their lives in the fight for freedom.
