Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey to sign joint defence pact

Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Türkiye are set to formalise a landmark joint defence agreement during a trilateral summit in Saudi Arabia on Friday.

The strategic pact comes as regional powers seek to deepen military and security cooperation amid escalating tensions in the Middle East following the US-Israel war on Iran.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Asim Munir arrived in Saudi Arabia on Thursday for a three-day official visit, while Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is expected to join the summit on Friday.

The Pakistani delegation was received in Jeddah by Makkah Deputy Governor Prince Saud bin Mishaal bin Abdulaziz and Saudi Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture Abdulrahman Abdulmohsen Al-Fadley.

Pakistan has also been actively pursuing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict involving Iran, which has disrupted regional stability and maritime traffic through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

The upcoming trilateral defence pact builds on the Pakistan-Saudi mutual defence agreement signed in September 2025, under which both countries pledged to treat any attack on either nation as an attack on both. Earlier this year, Pakistan also deployed fighter jets and military personnel to Saudi Arabia to strengthen the kingdom’s security under the bilateral defence framework.

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have maintained decades-long military cooperation, with Islamabad providing defence training and advisory support, while Riyadh has consistently extended financial assistance to Pakistan during periods of economic hardship.

Earlier, PM Shehbaz and Field Marshal, performed Umrah along with a delegation in the holy city of Makkah.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Federal Ministers Khawaja Muhammad Asif and Attaullah Tarar, and Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi also performed Umrah.

The delegation prayed for the development and prosperity of the country, the Muslim Ummah and peace and stability in the world and the region.

Before performing Umrah, the delegation was blessed with the opportunity to visit the Holy Kaaba.
