Pakistan set for 5G launch amid device shortage

Pakistan 5G launch

Despite the limited availability of 5G compatible smartphones in Pakistan, telecom operators are preparing to commercially launch 5G services nationwide by mid August this year, enabling users to access faster internet speeds.

Mobile network companies have also suggested that the government introduce an instalment plan for purchasing mobile phones. Under the proposal users who default on payments could face a ban on obtaining SIM cards from any telecom operator.

Meanwhile, 5G services are unlikely to be available for Apple iPhone users in Pakistan before 2027. Reports indicate that Apple is expected to activate 5G support for Pakistani users only after reviewing the country’s market potential.

Officials from the IT and telecom ministry said Apple has informed authorities that 5G functionality on iPhones in Pakistan may be enabled in 2027 following a market assessment.

Currently, heavy taxes imposed on imported mobile phones, particularly iPhones have significantly reduced Apple’s market share in the country. However, 5G services are already supported on Samsung devices.
