UN Committee Adopts Four Pakistan-Sponsored Resolutions on Disarmament

Web desk: Pakistan has achieved a significant diplomatic success at the United Nations (UN), as the General Assembly’s First Committee adopted four key resolutions proposed by Islamabad on disarmament and international security.

Pakistan’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations said in a statement that the Committee unanimously approved two of its resolutions titled “Regional disarmament” and “Confidence-building measures in the regional and sub-regional contexts.”

The other two resolutions, titled “Conclusion of effective international arrangements to assure non-nuclear-weapon States against the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons.” And “Conventional arms control at the regional and subregional levels” were adopted with an overwhelming majority of member states.

“Pakistan has, for decades, led initiatives in the United Nations to advance priority issues of nuclear disarmament, regional disarmament, conventional arms control and confidence-building measures,” the
statement said.

“The adoption of these resolutions reaffirms the importance of the international community’s priority on ‘negative security assurances’ as well as embracing regional approaches to disarmament and arms control,” it added, referring to pledges made by nuclear-armed states not to use or threaten nuclear weapons against non-nuclear countries.

Pakistan Resolutions at UN

This is being seen as a diplomatic success for Pakistan and reflects its commitment to global peace and security.

Two resolutions were adopted unanimously. The resolutions are on regional disarmament and confidence-building measures. They aim to promote security, stability and mutual trust in different regions.

The other two resolutions call for the protection of non-nuclear-weapon States and control of conventional arms. An overwhelming majority adopted these. According to analysts, this strong support should be viewed as a sign of global trust in Pakistan’s stance.

Pakistan has long played an active role in UN forums on disarmament, arms control and regional security. The adoption of these resolutions shows that the international community values Pakistan’s initiatives for peace.

Pakistan says it will continue its efforts at the UN and the Conference on Disarmament. And the Disarmament Commission to further promote global stability and peace.
