Pakistan and Sri Lanka will begin their three-match T20I series on Friday, October 9, with the opening match scheduled to be played at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. The match will begin at 8:00 pm Pakistan Standard Time, with both teams aiming to gain an early advantage in the series.
Pakistan enter the contest as the favourites, with available match data giving them a 67% chance of victory, compared with 33% for Sri Lanka. The hosts will look to turn that statistical advantage into a strong performance under the lights.
Pakistan will be led by Sahibzada Farhan, with a squad combining experienced campaigners and promising young players. The batting lineup features Fakhar Zaman, Saim Ayub, Shadab Khan and Khawaja Nafay, while Abdul Samad and Arafat Minhas provide additional options. If selected, Fakhar Zaman will provide Pakistan with an experienced left-handed option at the top of the order, while Saim Ayub can contribute with both bat and ball.
Pakistan’s bowling attack includes Naseem Shah, Abrar Ahmed, Shadab Khan and Sufiyan Muqeem, offering a combination of pace and spin. Salman Mirza adds another left-arm pace option to the squad.
The bowling unit is expected to play a key role in the opening match, particularly during the middle overs, when Pakistan can utilise the spin options of Abrar Ahmed, Shadab Khan and Sufiyan Muqeem.
Sri Lanka will also enter the series with a strong mix of experience and emerging talent. Kusal Mendis will lead the side and take responsibility behind the stumps, while Dasun Shanaka, Dushmantha Chameera and Maheesh Theekshana are among the team’s key experienced players.
Mendis provides stability at the top of the batting order, while Shanaka offers an additional all-round option. Chameera will spearhead the pace attack, with his experience expected to be important against Pakistan’s batting lineup.
Sri Lanka have several spin options at their disposal, including Maheesh Theekshana, Dunith Wellalage and Vijayakanth Viyaskanth. Their performances could prove crucial depending on the conditions at the Rawalpindi venue.
Kamindu Mendis and Sahan Arachchige add further all-round depth, while Nuwan Thushara and Binura Fernando provide additional pace-bowling options. With both sides boasting a blend of experienced players and emerging talent, the opening T20I promises an intriguing start to the three-match series.
