Pakistan, Wales share thrilling 3-3 draw in Hockey World Cup

Pakistan and Wales played out an entertaining 3-3 draw in Pool D of the Hockey World Cup in Amsterdam, leaving both sides with one point after two matches and still in contention for a place in the second round. Pakistan made a bright start, with Abdul Rehman opening the scoring just three minutes into the game after producing an impressive aerial move along the baseline.

Wales responded strongly in the second quarter and capitalised on Pakistan’s numerical disadvantage after Sufyan Khan was shown a yellow card. Gareth Furlong levelled the contest with a powerful penalty-corner strike before Rhys Bradshaw put Wales ahead just 30 seconds later.

Pakistan fought back in the final quarter, with Sufyan Khan returning from his suspension to equalise through another penalty corner. Hannan Shahid then put Pakistan back in front after his effort took a deflection on its way into the net. Wales refused to surrender, however, as Furlong calmly converted a penalty stroke to score his second goal of the match and restore parity at 3-3. The draw leaves both Pakistan and Wales with one point from their opening two Pool D matches, keeping their hopes of advancing to the next round alive.

Pakistan made a bright start and took the lead in the first quarter through Abdul Rehman, who finished a well-worked attack to put his side 1-0 ahead. Pakistan looked composed in possession and created several attacking opportunities, while Wales struggled to convert their chances. Wales, however, responded strongly in the second quarter, scoring twice to turn the match around and take a 2-1 lead into half-time. Pakistan continued to push forward and won several penalty corners, but the Welsh defence stood firm to preserve its advantage.

The third quarter remained closely contested, with both sides creating chances but neither managing to find the net. Wales therefore entered the final 15 minutes with a narrow 2-1 lead.

Pakistan produced a strong comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring twice within two minutes. Sufyan Khan and Hannan Shahid found the net to put Pakistan 3-2 ahead and leave the team within touching distance of victory. Wales refused to give up and struck late to level the score at 3-3, denying Pakistan all three points in a dramatic finish. Gareth Furlong scored twice for Wales, while Rhys Bradshaw added the other goal. Pakistan will next face arch-rivals India on August 19 in another crucial Pool D encounter.
