Pakistan warns Norway against interfering in internal affairs

Web desk: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan has issued a strong demarche to the Norwegian Ambassador on Thursday, over his attendance at a Supreme Court hearing on 11 November 2025, concerning a case related to Iman Mazari.

Pakistan warns Norway

The demarche reads, “We have received a report that on 11 November 2025, you attended a hearing at the Supreme Court for a case related to Iman Mazari.”

In the note, Pakistan said the ambassador’s presence amounted to “deliberate interference in internal matters.” And a “flagrant violation” of the Vienna Convention 1961.

“This is tantamount to deliberate interference in internal matters of Pakistan. And is a flagrant violation of the Vienna Convention 1961,” it further reads.

The Ministry cited Article 41 of the Convention. This obligates diplomats to respect the laws of the host country and refrain from involvement in its internal affairs.

“Under the Convention’s Article 41, diplomats are bound to respect the laws of the receiving state and not interfere in its internal affairs,” it states further.

The Foreign Office further stated that this was not a singular incident.

It claimed a pattern of activity by Norwegian entities supporting elements hostile to Pakistan, including certain NGOs.

“Unfortunately, this is not a singular incident. We have observed a pattern of activity by the Norwegian side where elements hostile to Pakistan state are supported and promoted by Norwegian NGOs,” it said.

Court cases involving individuals accused of anti-state activities are considered highly sensitive domestic matters.

Pakistan emphasised that any association of foreign diplomats with such elements is unacceptable. “We cannot tolerate any association by the diplomatic corps with anti-state elements,” it read.

The note stressed that while Pakistan respects Norway’s sovereignty, it expects reciprocal respect.

The Foreign Ministry urged Norway to adhere to the Vienna Convention. And maintain proper diplomatic norms and protocols in the future.

The statement ends with, “As Pakistan respects the sovereignty of Norway in its internal matters. We expect that Norway would also respect Pakistan’s sovereignty. We emphasise that Norway must continue to abide by its commitments to the Vienna Conventions and observe the norms of diplomatic engagement and protocol in the future.”
