Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has announced major reforms in the passport and immigration system, offering big relief to citizens across the country.

According to reports, the interior minister has tasked newly appointed Director General of Passport and Immigration, Muhammad Ali Randhawa, with implementing sweeping changes to modernise the department.

As part of the reforms, authorities have been directed to digitise the entire passport and immigration system, transitioning it into a fully paperless operation. It is expected to streamline processes, reduce delays, and improve overall service delivery.

The minister said that public facilitation remains the top priority, highlighting that the reforms are focused on making passport and immigration services more efficient, accessible, and user-friendly for Pakistani citizens.

On the other hand, Pakistan is regaining its global respect with every passing day, as the green passport ranking has claimed record spot in 2026.

The green passport jumped to 98th spot from the 100th in the first month of 2026 due to diplomatic efforts and country’s record global agreements.

How many passports were issued during the past three years?

Over the past three years, authorities issued 17.268 million new and renewed passports nationwide, generating a massive Rs149 billion in revenue, according to official figures.

The Upper House was informed through a written reply that Rs 64,392 million was generated from passport issuance in fiscal year 2024–2025, compared to Rs 50,906million in 2023–2024 and Rs 34,495 million in 2022–2023.

Lawmakers were also briefed on passport production costs. The printing cost of a 36-page Machine Readable Passport (MRP) stands at Rs 2,093, while a 72-page passport costs Rs 2,445 and a 100-page passport Rs 3,004. Meanwhile, a 36-page e-passport costs Rs 4,098 to print, and a 72-page e-passport costs Rs 4,874.
