The Sindh government-backed film Mera Lyari has entered the race for an Academy Award nomination, a development being hailed as a major achievement for Pakistan’s film industry.
The Sindh government said it is hopeful that if the film secures an official Oscar nomination, it will mark a historic milestone in the country’s cinematic history.
The announcement was made during a meeting of the Information Department’s Film Board, chaired by Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon. The meeting reviewed ongoing efforts to promote the province’s film industry, assessed current film projects and discussed future strategies for the sector.
Officials informed the meeting that the first phase of film projects being produced under the Information Department has been completed successfully. The board also reviewed progress on collaborations with national and international OTT platforms, as well as ongoing negotiations for the distribution and screening of the films.
Speaking at the meeting, Sharjeel Inam Memon said the Sindh government is taking serious steps to promote the film industry, culture and the creative economy. He said the film industry not only highlights Pakistan’s cultural heritage and presents a positive image of the country to the world, but also creates opportunities for employment, investment and the development of creative talent.
He added that the government’s vision is to develop Sindh into a modern filmmaking hub that meets international standards, enabling local filmmakers and artists to showcase their talent on the global stage.
The meeting was attended by Information Secretary Kashif Gulzar Sheikh, Director General Information Muazzam Pirzada, Director of Films Hizbullah Memon, Film Board members Waqas Rizvi, Saleem Khan, Ehtesham Ansari, Rab Nawaz and other officials. Participants also exchanged proposals on future film projects and measures to strengthen the province’s creative sector.
