Pakistan’s seafood exports hit record high as new markets open up

Pakistan seafood exports

Pakistan’s fish and seafood exports have crossed the $500 million mark for the first time, marking a major step forward for the country’s maritime sector.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said the annual target was achieved 46 days ahead of schedule, crediting steady policy support, improved facilities and access to new markets. The development reflects growing demand for Pakistani seafood and stronger compliance with global standards.

The minister said coordinated work by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and the Marine Fisheries Department helped improve quality, modernise operations and open doors in international markets. He also acknowledged the role of industry players in meeting export targets earlier than expected.

A key breakthrough came with Pakistan’s entry into the Russian market. So far, 16 companies have been cleared to export seafood to Russia, a move expected to create further openings in the wider Eurasian region. Officials estimate exports could rise to $800 million annually, with Russia alone contributing around $300 million in the coming years.

Growth driven by new markets and better quality

Exports showed strong growth during the first half of the current fiscal year. Between July and December 2025, shipments reached 122,629 tonnes worth $253.24 million, compared to 102,942 tonnes valued at $208.25 million in the same period last year. This reflects an increase of over 19 percent in volume and more than 21 percent in value.

Frozen fish remained the leading export, followed by shrimps, prawns and cuttlefish. A wider product range, including crabs and fish meal, also helped boost earnings through value addition.

China continued to lead as the top buyer, accounting for nearly 59 percent of exports, followed by Thailand. Shipments to the UAE, Malaysia and Japan also increased, while exporters expanded their presence in markets such as the EU, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam and the US.

Monthly exports remained strong towards the end of the year, supported by seasonal demand and improved logistics. At the same time, non tax revenue from the sector recorded a modest rise.

The minister also confirmed that Pakistan secured a four year extension to continue seafood exports to the US after meeting regulatory requirements.

Looking ahead, the government plans to set up a 100 acre seafood processing and export zone at Korangi Fisheries Harbour. The project is expected to include modern processing units, cold storage and advanced freezing facilities, aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s position in the global seafood trade.
