Pakistani pharma company wins PIC/S recognition for producing injections, eye drops

A pharmaceutical company based in Pakistan has achieved the esteemed PIC/S recognition, demonstrating its compliance with global quality standards for the production of injectable medicines and eye drops, thus becoming the first in the nation to obtain international accreditation for its sterile manufacturing facility.

This global certification allows the company to broaden its export reach to regulated high-end markets such as Malaysia, Africa, Central Asia, and ASEAN countries from Pakistan.

According to ATCO Group, it is the sole pharmaceutical company in Pakistan with a sterile manufacturing facility that meets the internationally recognised PIC/S GMP standards.

The PIC/S framework represents the highest standard in pharmaceutical inspections, bringing together over 50 regulators from developed nations worldwide to ensure a unified quality standard, as stated by the company.

Dr. Obaidullah Malik, the Chief Executive Officer of the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP), confirmed that the company has recently received this international recognition, which is expected to improve the country’s pharmaceutical product and medical device exports beyond the current $1 billion annually.

With the Malaysian accreditation, the firm is now certified to extend its export capabilities to over 50 countries that are part of the PIC/S framework, in addition to Malaysia.

The company plans to start exporting certified products to Malaysia, Africa, and Central Asia.

“Our next goal is the European Union and the MHRA in England. We are currently working on that,” Dr. Anwar stated.
