Patients raise concerns over hygiene conditions at Islamabad’s PIMS hospital

PIMS refuses newborn to mother: Family moves court

The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has been the subject of concern after footage and photographs were posted on social media of a patient being treated in an emergency ward that looked like it was in an unclean condition.

The videos, which were quickly spread on social media, were initially posted by social media users and then picked up by prominent individuals who said the hospital’s emergency room was not clean even though it is one of the country’s largest public health care facilities.

The videos revealed that medical waste bins were placed near patients and treatment, raising concerns about infection control measures.

A number of social media users asked how patients would get their medical treatment done in such circumstances and asked authorities to be aware of it.

A lawmaker also demanded an inquiry, adding that public hospitals have to maintain proper hygiene to keep their patients from avoidable health risks.

Islamabad resident Ahmed Raza, who recently visited PIMS with his family member, told The Pakistan Connect that the situation seen in the videos was what he and his sick family member witnessed. Ahmed Raza further said,

“While the doctors did their best to care for patients, the environment was not clean, washrooms were dirty, waste bins overflowed and attendants were forced to stand in crowded hallways; a hospital should be a place of healing, not a place to add to the list of health concerns.”

A patient Sadia Khan also raised her concern about the sanitation measures.

“There are too many patients and not enough focus on hygiene,” she told The Pakistan Connect, “the medical staff worked hard, but hygiene should not be compromised; the authorities should work on maintaining the cleanliness and ensure regular cleaning in all wards.”

At the time of this report, the hospital had not responded in detail to the allegations to the public.
