Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir have met the US vice president JD Vance in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, during talks to advance the implementation of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the US and Iran.
Earlier, PM Shehbaz and Field Marshal Asim Munir landed in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, for crucial technical talks between US and Iran.
The Prime Minister’s Office said in an official statement that both leaders will take part in discussions scheduled for June 21, being held as a follow-up to the agreement previously signed by Tehran and Washington. The PM is accompanied by a high-level delegation during the landmark visit.
Prior to this, the Foreign Office said that high-level delegations from Iran, Qatar and the United States would also participate in the talks, calling them the first formal engagement since the signing of the Islamabad MoU on June 17.
The FO said Pakistan would continue supporting the understandings reached between Tehran and Washington, adding that its facilitative role reflected a principled, balanced and constructive approach throughout the crisis.
Islamabad’s efforts included hosting earlier rounds of US-Iran talks and maintaining diplomatic contacts that ultimately led to the memorandum
JD Vance arrives in Switzerland
US Vice President JD Vance arrived in Switzerland on Sunday for the historic talks with Iran mediated by Pakistan, saying that it would likely be a couple of days of peace talks with Iranian officials.
As per details, Vance and his wife arrived at Emmen Air Base in Switzerland at 5:59 a.m. (0359 GMT), a vice presidential spokesperson said.
Iran delegation lands in Switzerland
Iran’s delegation, named “Minab 168” and led by Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, arrived in Zurich, according to Iranian state broadcaster Press TV.
