US cabinet confirms Pakistan acting as mediator between US, Iran

United States (US) President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran has allowed 10 oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz as a gesture of goodwill.

During a cabinet meeting on Thursday, President Trump said that Iran allowed 10 tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz as a “gift” to show that it was serious about negotiations.

It is pertinent to mention that Donald Trump confirmed that the talks between the US and Iran are currently ongoing. However, Iran rejected Trump’s claim about talks between the two countries.

United States Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, said on Thursday that the US has shared a 15-point peace plan with Iran through the Pakistani government.

He added during a White House Cabinet meeting, attended by President Donald Trump, that if the deal succeeds, it will benefit Iran, the region, and the world.

Pakistan is acting as a mediator

“We have, along with your foreign policy team, presented a 15-point action list that forms the framework for a peace deal. This has been circulated through the Pakistani government, acting as the mediator, and this has resulted in strong and positive messaging and talks, as you just indicated to the press,” Witkoff said.

“But these are sensitive diplomatic discussions, and you have directed us to maintain confidentiality on the specific terms and not negotiate through the news media, as others do. We will see where things lead, and if we can convince Iran that this is the inflexion point with no good alternatives for them, other than more death and destruction,” he added.

A senior political-security official told state broadcaster Press TV on Wednesday that Iran has rejected the US proposal to end the ongoing conflict. The official said Iran will agree to a ceasefire only on its own terms and timeline, and called the proposal one-sided and excessive.

Meanwhile, Steve Witkoff praised Donald Trump and said his “peace through strength” policy is the most effective way to reach a diplomatic solution.
