PMA expresses concern over growing cases of kidney disease in Pakistan

The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has expressed serious concern regarding the worsening crisis of kidney disease in Pakistan.

A press release from the PMA indicates that current medical statistics show that chronic kidney disease (CKD) impacts roughly 15% to 20% of adults aged 40 and above in our nation.

With an estimated annual incidence of up to 100 cases per million people, Pakistan is expected to witness nearly 25,000 to 50,000 new end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients this year alone, all of whom will require life-saving dialysis or transplantation.

The PMA recommends that the public consume only boiled or filtered water to reduce the risk of developing kidney disease.

It is advised to steer clear of untreated groundwater, which may contain elevated levels of arsenic and heavy metals.

Regular monitoring of blood pressure and sugar levels is essential, as uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension account for over 60% of kidney failure cases.

Furthermore, the advice emphasises avoiding high-sodium “junk foods,” processed snacks, and carbonated beverages.

PMA further stated, “Excessive salt intake is a direct factor contributing to hypertension and kidney strain. We strongly encourage parents to keep their children away from fast foods and excessive sugar.”

Early-onset obesity is increasingly becoming a precursor to chronic kidney problems in our younger population, as stated by the PMA in its press release.

Health advisory issued for Hajj pilgrims

In February, the Ministry of Religious Affairs issued a health advisory for Hajj pilgrims.

It mentioned that those who are suffering from complex and dangerous diseases cannot be allowed to travel for Hajj.

According to the ministry, people who are suffering from severe diseases like advanced cancer will not be able to go for Hajj.

Similarly, pilgrims with serious heart diseases or heart failure, kidney failure, chronic respiratory and severe lung diseases as well as liver diseases, will also have to avoid travelling.
