PMD warns of rain, hailstorm and strong winds across Pakistan

Hailstorm and rain in Islamabad

A weather system developing over northern Balochistan and western parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is expected to bring rain, strong winds and thunderstorms to several regions over the next few hours, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department.

Islamabad and Rawalpindi are also likely to come under the system, with rain and possible hailstorm expected later tonight.

The Met Office said the westerly wave is currently influencing most parts of the country, with its immediate impact likely in northern Balochistan, including Quetta, Loralai, Sibi, Ziarat, Chaman, Pishin, Qila Abdullah, Qila Saifullah, Barkhan, Musa Khel and Zhob.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, areas such as Waziristan, Dera Ismail Khan, Orakzai, Khyber, Mohmand, Bajaur, Tank, Lakki Marwat, Bannu, Karak, Hangu, Kohat, Charsadda, Swabi, Kurram, Peshawar, Nowshera and Mardan are also expected to see rain accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorms.

The weather activity is likely to extend to upper parts of the province, including Abbottabad, Mansehra, Battagram, Buner, Malakand, Kohistan, Shangla, Swat, Dir and Chitral, as well as Kashmir. Parts of the Potohar region, including Mianwali, Talagang, Attock, Bhakkar, Sargodha and Chakwal, may also experience similar conditions.

The PMD warned that isolated areas could receive heavy rainfall, while hailstorms and lightning strikes are also possible.

Karachi, Sindh to see rain, cloudy weather

Separately, the Met Office has forecast partly cloudy weather in Karachi with chances of light rain or drizzle on Saturday evening and Sunday.

Temperatures in Karachi are expected to remain between 31°C and 33°C during the day, with minimum temperatures around 25°C. Humidity is likely to fall from around 76 percent in the daytime to between 50 and 60 percent in the evening.

Sunday is expected to bring similar weather, with slightly lower humidity levels. By Monday, conditions are likely to turn mostly sunny, with temperatures ranging between 32°C and 34°C.

A west to southwesterly wind is expected to prevail in the city during this period.

In other parts of Sindh, including Hyderabad, Badin, Thatta, Umerkot and Tharparkar, light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are expected on Sunday, with some areas likely to receive rain again on Monday.

Safety concerns after recent storm

The PMD has cautioned that strong winds, hail and lightning during this weather spell could damage weak structures such as electricity poles, billboards and solar panels.

The warning comes days after a thunderstorm in Karachi left at least 20 people dead and eight injured, highlighting the risks associated with severe weather.

Authorities have advised the public to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary exposure during storms and stay updated with the latest weather alerts.
