President Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday underscored the key role that education plays in defining Pakistan’s future saying that the country’s progress is inextricably linked to the empowerment of its youth.
In his message to the nation on the occasion of World Education Day, he emphasised on the fact that education should go beyond the teaching of mechanical memorisation and instead foster curiosity, capability and high moral character in the students.
The president highlighted the fact that Article 25-A of the Constitution embodies the state’s commitment to free and compulsory education for all children, is a primary obligation.
He emphasised that education should not be all about textbooks and young people should be prepared to deal with the troubles of a rapidly changing world.
Managing today’s demands, President Zardari said such basic skills as digital literacy have become indispensable. He made the case for giving more attention to research, innovation and digital education, saying these are critical to national advancements.
He also emphasised the importance of technical and vocational education in preparing youth for dignified and sustainable employment opportunities by providing them with the skills that lead to dignified employment.
The president further stressed the importance of equal educational opportunities, especially for women and the youth who belong to underdeveloped and marginalised regions.
He stated the importance of inclusivity, which is a prerequisite to achieving meaningful national development and that no segment of society should be left behind.
Terming education a national priority, President Zardari called for making youth as a major stakeholder in the development journey of Pakistan.
He stated that education was the cornerstone of peace, progress and prosperity and that if sustained investment was made into learning, then the country would be manned to deal well with its future challenges.
