Web desk: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a warning to social media users against sharing illegal content on internet platforms.
In a statement, a PTA spokesperson said that users should remain cautious while posting or sharing online content.
The spokesperson further added that freedom of expression is a fundamental right. However, using this freedom to promote or circulate illegal material is unacceptable.
The PTA clarified that content involving disrespect to religions, the Holy Prophet (PBUH), or sacred personalities is strictly prohibited.
In addition, sharing any material that incites hatred or violence against individuals or institutions is also not allowed.
The authority said that false and hateful propaganda against defence and other national institutions are punishable offence under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016.
Additionally, obscene or immoral content, and the spread of fake news are also punishable offences under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016.
The authority urged the public to report such content in the national interest and to help maintain law and order in the country.
Citizens were advised to use the PTA’s Content Management System mobile application to report illegal or harmful material on social media platforms.
PTA warns SIM holders
Additionally, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority reminded mobile phone users across the country that all SIM cards must be registered in the user’s own name.
PTA warned that misuse of a registered connection could lead to legal action, as it is a violation of the telecom regulations.
It was stressed that the registered owner of a SIM bears full legal responsibility for any activity carried out through that connection.
This includes all calls, messages, and data usage, regardless of who is actually using the SIM.
