Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has ordered mobile phone companies and retailers to stop SIM card sales from 12 AM to 6 AM across the country, according to the reports today.
According to the reports, the decision was taken to prevent the illegal sale and misuse of fake SIM cards and to improve the country’s security system.
PTA directed all mobile companies to ensure that SIM sales remain suspended during the restricted hours.
The authority has said that the move aims to protect consumers and improve transparency in the telecom system, as concerns over illegal and fake SIMs continue to grow.
Under the new instructions, all authorised franchises, retailers, and SIM sale points must follow the order. Strict legal and administrative action will also be taken against anyone who is found violating telecom rules.
PTA also advised citizens to buy SIM cards only from authorised centres during allowed timings and complete biometric verification before activation.
The authority asked the public to report any violations through the PTA complaint management system, mobile app, or toll free number.
Officials said that the step is important for protecting consumers, stopping SIM misuse, and make sure of a safer and more transparent telecom environment in Pakistan.
PTA warns of SIM blocking
PTA has advised mobile phone users to ensure that their Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs) remain valid and updated in order to avoid SIM card blockage.
According to the PTA, SIMs registered against expired, cancelled, or deceased CNICs are being blocked. This is a part of measures expected to enhance digital security in Pakistan.
The authority also urged citizens to renew their CNICs through the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) to prevent disruption in services.
The government is also considering easing PTA mobile phone taxes, commonly known as PTA approval charges, for overseas Pakistanis visiting the country.
