Web desk: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has advised the public not to buy unlicensed internet equipment.
The PTA said using unlicensed equipment can cause legal issues, disrupt network quality, and affect the proper use of radio spectrum.
“The procurement or import of LoRaWAN equipment and its sale without a valid PTA license may constitute a serious violation,” the authority added.
The PTA urged citizens to buy internet-related equipment, including LoRaWAN devices and services, only from licensed Internet of Things (IoT) Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN) providers.
The authority warned that ignoring these guidelines could lead to legal problems.
Unlicensed equipment can interfere with other licensed services and compromise the quality and security of national IoT networks.
Licensed VPN providers
In a separate move, the PTA has issued new rules for Virtual Private Network (VPN) services.
The authority has started licensing VPN providers under the reinstated Class Value Added Services (CVAS-Data) framework.
Several companies have received licenses to offer VPN services legally, including Alpha 3 Cubic (Steer Lucid), Zettabyte (Crest VPN), Nexilium Tech (Kestrel VPN), UKI Conic Solutions (QuiXure VPN), and Vision Tech 360 (Kryptonyme VPN).
Individuals and organisations can now obtain VPN services directly from these providers without registering their IP addresses or mobile numbers with the PTA.
The PTA said this initiative aims to make VPN use more secure and convenient.
Licensed VPNs will help reduce cybersecurity risks and strengthen data protection in Pakistan.
