The Punjab Education Department has approved the completion of the full syllabus for primary classes from Grade 1 to Grade 5, starting with the new academic session on April 1, 2027. A new curriculum has also been prepared and sent to the Chief Minister’s Secretariat for final approval. The proposal is expected to be presented for approval at the next cabinet meeting.
Provincial Education Minister Rana Sikandar told the leadership of the Punjab Teachers Union that a new syllabus has been prepared for each primary grade. The revised curriculum has been simplified, with the number of textbooks reduced to make learning easier for students. The new syllabus also places greater emphasis on information technology and computer education, according to media reports.
Once final approval is granted, printing of the new textbooks will begin in October. The books for all primary classes are expected to be available in the market by January 15, 2027, ahead of the new academic session. Punjab Teachers Union Central Secretary General Liaquat also welcomed the revised curriculum, saying that the new syllabus had been made simpler for students.
The Punjab Education Department is introducing an activity-based learning approach for primary students aimed at moving away from traditional rote memorisation. The new system will focus on developing children’s creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving skills and practical abilities from an early age.
Under the revised approach, textbooks will feature more interactive lessons and activities designed to help students understand academic concepts through real-life situations and everyday experiences. According to PECTA officials, the activity-based learning model is being developed for primary schools across Punjab and is expected to be formally introduced from the 2027 academic year.
