Punjab government has approved multiple flood prevention projects across the province to prevent soil erosion.
Punjab Health Minister and Chairman of the Cabinet Committee on Disaster Management, Khawaja Salman Rafique, has stated that safeguarding individuals from financial and human losses during the monsoon season is the foremost priority of the Punjab government.
He added that all relevant departments are working in full coordination for flood prevention initiatives throughout the province.
He conveyed these sentiments while presiding over a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Disaster Management at the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Headquarters on Thursday.
The meeting assessed and approved various schemes aimed at preventing river erosion and protecting at-risk populations and agricultural lands.
Flood prevention measures approved to prevent soil erosion
During the session, emergency measures amounting to Rs94.49 million were approved to shield the villages of Biraj Cheema and Biraj Dhalla from erosion caused by the Chenab River.
Additionally, a separate project costing Rs98.74 million was authorized for the protection of Thatti Baloch village, while another initiative worth Rs86.71 million was approved to safeguard Garhi Gulla and Ratta villages.
The committee instructed authorities to implement immediate actions to protect agricultural land from erosion by the Chenab River. A significant project valued at Rs283.481 million was also approved for the construction of a protective dam on the Ravi River.
Furthermore, the meeting approved protective measures totaling Rs34.394 million for the safety of residents in Ganda Singh Wala, Kasur.
Another project, costing Rs99.95 million, was approved to mitigate flood-related erosion of agricultural land in the village of Labanwala, Sheikhupura, and to avert future risks.
A flood protection scheme for Dhanghana in Mianwali was also given the green light.
In his address to the meeting, Khawaja Salman Rafique said that under the leadership of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, significant decisions are being made to combat river erosion and diminish flood risks.
He further commented that the government aims to protect millions of citizens from financial and human losses through timely preventive actions.
