Punjab govt mulls to ban ‘extremist party’ following violent protests

LAHORE: The government of Punjab has decided to ban the extremist party following heavy losses due to violent protests in Lahore and surrounding.

During a high-level meeting on law and order, headed by the Chief Minister, it was decided that the provincial government will recommend the federal government to impose a ban on an extremist party, a private media outlet reported.

As per details, individuals who are involved in hate speech, incitement, and lawlessness will be immediately detained.

However, those responsible for the martyrdom of police officers and destruction of public property will face trials in anti-terrorism courts (ATCs).

The leadership of the extremist group will be placed under the Fourth Schedule of the Anti-Terrorism Act, and all its assets and properties will be handed over to the Auqaf Department.

The display of the group’s posters, banners, and advertisements will be completely banned, and its social media accounts will be blocked.

The provincial government also ordered the freezing of all bank accounts linked to the extremist organization and announced strict enforcement of the Loudspeaker Act.

Crackdown on violent protesters

On the hand, Punjab Police have launched a crackdown Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) violent protesters.

The police arrested over 3,000 individuals accused of vandalism during recent demonstrations.

According to police records, a total of 76 cases have been registered against the suspects across Punjab’s police stations, with the highest number 39 filed in Lahore alone, followed by eight in Sheikhupura.

In Lahore, police have detained 326 violent protesters, while 217 were detained in Sheikhupura. Mandi Bahauddin saw 210 arrests, Rawalpindi 190, Faisalabad 180, Gujranwala 160, Sialkot 150, and Attock 156, as per the official data.

The violent protestors injured 250 officers and constables across the province including 142 in Lahore.
