RAWALPINDI: Punjab Police dispersed protesters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) with water cannon. This was done close to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.
Demonstrators had not ended their sit-in in front of the high-security prison.
Previously, sisters of the PTI founder had held a protest there. They wanted to see the imprisoned former Prime Minister.
The police blocked their access to the jail premises. Officials of the police said that the family had arrived at a time after official meeting hours were over.
The refusal led to the hours-long protest by the supporters of the PTI.
Tensions Escalate
Heavy security had been deployed around the Central Jail, Rawalpindi, by the authorities. Section 144 had also been implemented in Islamabad and Rawalpindi by the police.
This part, in effect, prohibits any form of gathering and demonstrations. The ban did not stop the PTI members and workers from coming in large numbers.
They sang slogans and demanded instant access to their party leader.
According to reports, the situation escalated to a high level when the police came to clear the road. PTI workers were against the riot police. This is when the police used the water cannon to disperse the people forcefully.
Family Issues and Accusations
The sisters of Imran Khan claimed that the police became violent and manhandled them in the conflict.
They filed an official complaint that required an unbiased investigation. In addition, they alleged that authorities had illegally isolated the founder of the PTI.
The jail authorities deny all the reports about the health of the former Prime Minister.
They ensure that he is stable and is taking adequate medical care.
Nevertheless, the PTI still requests transparency and the assured right to visit.
These demonstrations bring out the political rift in the treatment of the arrested leader.
