The Punjab government has categorically denied that schools will remain closed for 10 days due to Basant and has repeatedly made it clear that no such decision has been taken in this regard.
A fake notification has been circulating on social media saying that the Punjab School Education Department has ordered the closing of all the public and private schools in the entire province from February 1 to February 10, 2026 due to celebration of the Basant festival.
The notification also falsely alleged that school rooftop properties would be leased or auctioned off for the kite flying activities, with the district education authorities instructed to enforce these measures.
The Punjab government has categorically denied these claims and has repeatedly made it clear that no such decision has been taken to have schools closed down for Basant.
Rana Sikandar Hayat, Minister for Education of Punjab, who frequently shares official announcements about the schedule of schools on his social media accounts, said that no such order had been passed.
He emphasised that any official decisions on whether schools will have to close or if there will be public holidays, will be disseminated through proper channels and brought to light.
Separately, the provincial government has officially declared February 6 a local holiday in the capital Lahore for Basant festival, through which citizens will be able to participate in the spring festival.
This decision was taken after a proposal by the district administration which further directed that children below 18 years of age will be allowed to celebrate Basant along with their families.
The government and relevant departments have promised a safe festival experience for the citizens in a hassle-free manner. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has permitted the Basant Festival to be celebrated for three days starting from Feb 6 till 8.
Authorities are working extensively to ensure a safe celebration without disrupting public order.
This clarification is to avoid confusion among parents and students, and among the general public, regarding school schedule announcements.
