Punjab introduces new subjects for non-Muslim students

The Punjab government has launched a new initiative aimed at improving educational inclusion for non Muslim students, with a particular focus on Christian students regarding the subjects they can choose.

As part of this initiative, non-Muslim students in Punjab will now have the opportunity to pursue their own religious education rather than being mandated to take subjects such as Islamic Studies or general Ethics.

The Punjab Education, Curriculum, Training and Assessment Authority (PECTAA) has formally approved Christian Religious Education textbooks for use in educational institutions.

These materials have been created by Educating Youth Publication and are designed for students in grades 1 through 8, as well as grades 11 and 12.

Additionally, other sanctioned subjects encompass Hinduism, Sikhism, Kalasha Taleem, and Buddhism for grades 1 to 3, while Zoroastrianism has been approved for grades 1 to 5.

This initiative signifies a departure from the previous educational framework and specifically introduces religious education tailored for minority communities.

According to the announcement made by PECTAA, these textbooks will be adopted in both public and private schools throughout Punjab for Christian and other minority students.

Officials characterise this decision as a landmark advancement in reinforcing the educational rights of minority communities.

This initiative is also part of a larger strategy by the Punjab government to foster inclusive education and ensure that students from diverse religious backgrounds have access to learning that aligns with their beliefs.
