The Punjab traffic police will get new uniforms across the province, according to reports on Tuesday. Police sources said that the new uniforms will be purchased for the traffic police during the current financial year.
What will Punjab traffic police’s new uniforms look like?
Officers will now wear white shirts and navy blue trousers instead of the grey uniform. The Lahore traffic police received new uniforms last year. However, officials had already approved another change in the uniform.
According to sources, the new uniform will be introduced in two phases. Lahore will be covered in the first phase. The new uniform will then be introduced across Punjab.
Punjab Police Chief Abdul Karim has approved the purchase of 12,000 new uniforms, according to sources. Sources said that the pre-qualification process for the purchase of uniforms for the traffic police and other Punjab Police units is expected to start this week.
Former Lahore CTO Athar Waheed had provided Rs5,000 per officer last year for the purchase of traffic police uniforms, according to police sources.
Punjab traffic wardens’ uniforms
Previously, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had decided to change the uniforms of traffic wardens, but then decided that traffic wardens would continue wearing their current uniforms.
The decision reversed an order issued four months ago to introduce a new uniform design. According to traffic authorities, preparations had already started to buy the current uniform after the new decision.
Around 14,000 new uniforms and accessories will be purchased for traffic wardens across Punjab. This will include Lahore. The estimated cost is Rs8 crore.
Officials had said at the time that an advertisement for the purchase of the current uniforms would be issued soon. Traffic authorities had recently designed a light brown uniform and presented it for approval.
Punjab’s traffic wardens were earlier set to receive new uniforms, moving from their traditional sky-blue attire to a khaki design. Punjab was earlier preparing to change the uniform of its traffic police force for the first time since its reorganisation in 2006.
