The Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has successfully accomplished 60 percent of the uplift and beautification efforts at Raja Bazaar and Commercial Market, thereby advancing the project towards its completion.
The completion deadline is established for May 30, with the inauguration expected in June by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
There is a possibility of an increase in the project cost, which amounts to Rs. 875 million.
By June, residents are expected to witness a significantly improved and more organised appearance of Raja Bazaar and Commercial Market.
At the same time, a parking plaza project exceeding Rs. 3.25 billion at Fawara Chowk, located on the site of the former municipal office in Rawalpindi, has been submitted to the Punjab government for approval.
Officials have reported that the underground cabling from Fawara Chowk to Dingi Khoi Chowk and adjacent commercial areas has already been finalised.
The beautification efforts are currently advancing rapidly, with traditional-style arches being constructed in front of shops using small red bricks.
Additionally, work is in progress on the façade enhancements of older buildings, repairs and renovations, installation of standardised signboards, development of pedestrian areas with tuff tiles, and the construction of footpaths, restrooms, and seating benches.
The initiation of decorative lighting and the planting of flowers and greenery have also commenced.
Authorities aim to transform the area into a pedestrian-friendly walking street by May 30, akin to Bank Road Saddar.
In Commercial Market, the underground cabling and utility relocation have been finalised, while beautification efforts continue to progress swiftly.
Chief Officer of the Municipal Corporation, Imran Ali, stated that the project is being executed under the “Sohna Punjab Programme,” with the May 30 deadline established to ensure enhanced cleanliness, improved aesthetics, and a better environment for the residents.
