Punjab government appoints Rao Abdul Karim as new IGP

The Punjab government has decided to appoint Rao Abdul Karim as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP) in Punjab.

Several media reports confirmed that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz approved the notification of Abdul Karim’s appointment as the new IGP.

The Punjab government had earlier shortlisted CCPO Bilal Siddique Kamyana and Additional IG of the Counter Terrorism Department, Waseem Sia, for the position of IGP.

However, the former IG Punjab, Dr Usman Anwar, would be given a position in the federal government.

Rao Abdul Karim’s Profile:

Rao Abdul Karim is a senior police officer who earlier served as District Police Officer (DPO) in  Jhang, Mianwali, and Kasur. He also served as a Regional Police Officer (RPO) in Gujranwala. He performed his duties as Additional IG of Punjab Highway Patrol.

The newly appointed IGP, Rao Abdul Karim, joined the police service in 1996 as an  Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).

Before his appointment as IGP, Rao Abdul Karim was performing his duties as Additional IGP, Special Branch.

Who was Dr Usman Anwar?   

Dr Usman Anwar joined the police force in 1995. He has a background in the medical field as he is an MBBS doctor, and he served in several positions in the police. He performed his duties in various roles as Additional IG NHMP and District Police Officer in various districts, including Okara and Sargodha.  

Dr Usman Anwar was previously serving as the IGP in Punjab. He belongs to the 23rd common batch of officers. He had also served as Additional IG Special Branch, Punjab.

During Dr Usman’s professional career, his major focus was on diverse areas, including health and welfare for police officials, eliminating corruption within the police force, and ensuring fair and transparent elections in the country.

Dr Usman was appointed as IGP in Punjab on 24 January 2023.
