Rawalpindi: Katchery Road underpass to be opened after Eid

Katchery road underpass will be opened for public use after Eid-ul-Fitr. It is currently among three underpasses worth Rs8 billion which are undergoing construction in Rawalpindi.

Additionally, a new deadline has been established for the renovation of Katchery Chowk, which is expected to be opened to traffic by April 30, in accordance with the directives from the Punjab government.

A two-lane single-barrel underpass, valued at Rs2.688 billion, is currently under construction to accommodate 146,252 vehicles each day traveling from Iftikhar Janjua Road to Katchery Chowk.

The underpass will have a height of 18 feet and a width of 26.25 feet. Officials have stated that the guide beam work for the Iftikhar Janjua underpass has been finalised.

As per the updated timeline, the structural work is anticipated to be finalised before Eidul Fitr, while the entire project is slated for completion by April 30.

Katchery road underpass nears completion

The Executive Engineer of the Punjab Highway Department, Qamar Ali Saqib, stated that over 45 percent of the project has been completed, and according to the schedule, the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) is expected to finish the structural work by Eid ul-Fitr.

It is important to note that two flyovers and three underpasses are being constructed at the same time at three different locations to accommodate the traffic of more than 250,000 vehicles each day.

Officials have indicated that Rs5.974 billion is allocated for one project, which involves the construction of a four-lane flyover between The Mall and Rashid Minhas Road.

The underpass will measure 26.5 feet in width and will facilitate access from Old Airport Road to Saddar in Rawalpindi. The total traffic volume on this segment of the road is 197,000 vehicles daily.

In the meantime, Rs4.672 billion is being invested in the Annexy Chowk or Jinnah Park flyover and underpass project to manage 142,035 vehicles each day.

The flyover will be constructed between Mushtaq Baig Shaheed Road and Old Airport Road, and an underpass will also be built from Katchery Chowk to Mushtaq Baig Shaheed Road.
