Rawalpindi railway station upgraded into 'Safe and Smart Railway Station'

The Rawalpindi Railway Station has undergone significant upgrades, with modern facilities and an enhanced security framework.

The 145-year-old building has now been transformed into a “Safe and Smart Railway Station.”

As part of the renovation, the platforms have been rebuilt, and contemporary stalls offering tea, snacks, newspapers, and books have been established.

The waiting areas have seen improvements, a Commercially Important Person (CIP) lounge has been introduced, and the washrooms have been thoroughly cleaned and modernised.

A state-of-the-art security system has been implemented, featuring CCTV cameras strategically placed throughout the station, including in parking zones and at entry and exit points.

Passenger luggage is subjected to screening via advanced scanning devices, with the contents displayed on large monitoring screens.

Additionally, a refined cleanliness protocol is now operational, with personnel from the Rawalpindi Waste Management Company engaged in ongoing cleaning activities.

Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi commented that the station now provides an experience similar to that of an airport for travelers.

The system facilitates continuous monitoring of the station, its surrounding areas, and reservation offices, while also aiding in the assessment of staff performance.

The minister further noted that modern CIP lounges are being constructed at key stations, alongside designated waiting areas for women and families, complimentary Wi-Fi, and ATM facilities.

He mentioned that the new system, developed in partnership with the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO), encompasses a network of 184 CCTV cameras, establishing it as the first station in the nation to feature such an extensive surveillance system.
