Report links RSS ideology to India’s political shift

Web Desk: The New York Times has linked India’s Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as secretive, semi military Hindu nationalist organization by examining its 100 years of history.

The newspaper said that since 1925 the RSS promoted religious polarization by running its training camps that later benefited it from political turning points that included the period 1948 the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi’s and the emergency imposed in 1975.

“In 1992 the demolition of the Babri Mosque marked a shift as an electoral strategy toward religious mobilization and after 2014 the developments reflects that critic view as undermining the secular face of India’s constitution” the report said.  

Such acts have the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) characterized pollical face by citing policies such as the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and measures affecting minorities as part of a broader agenda.

The report also notes that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has longstanding ties to the RSS and is portrayed as advancing its ideological goals.
