Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi sentenced to 17 years each in Toshakhana-2 case

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his spouse Bushra Bibi has been sentenced to overall 17 years each and a fine of over Rs 10 million in the Toshakhana-2 case.

The case was heard by Special Judge Central Shah Rukh Arjumand. PTI founder and Bushra Bibi were produced in the courtroom. Defence Lawyer Salman Safdar and special prosecutor Zulfiqar Abbas Naqvi was also present along with his team.

The court sentenced the couple to 10 years each and a further seven years under section 409.

Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi have been sentenced to a total of 17 years in prison each.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10 million on each of the convicts.

Under Section 409 of the Pakistan Penal Code, both were awarded seven years’ imprisonment after establishing of entrustment and dishonest retention.

The Toshakhana-2 case pertains to allegations regarding the alleged misuse and improper handling of state gifts received during the PTI founder Imran Khan’s tenure in office as a public office holder and not as a politician.

The case is based on a Bvlgari jewellery gift set received in May 2021, which was not deposited and was retained by the couple at a nominal price. Under Pakistani law, state gifts belong to the state. The record states the gift was entered in registers without physical deposit.

According to the invoices, Bulgari Italy was estimated at a cost of €300,000 and €80,000 but it was undervalued and caused a loss of Rs 32.85 million to the national excehquer.Necklace and earrings were assessed at Rs 1.6 million combined while the claimed actual value exceeded Rs 71 million.

The prosecution maintains that the gifts were not declared or managed in accordance with the relevant rules and it as a public trust matter.
