Sazgar Engineering Works Limited is launching the locally assembled GWM Tank 500 Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) today. The company is also introducing a new Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) variant of the Tank 500, expanding the model’s range for local buyers.
This will mark a key change in the large hybrid Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) market in Pakistan. The move will replace the fully imported version that the company had been selling since early last year.
Price and booking
The price list for the New Sazgar GWM Tank is as follows:
1- GWM Tank 500 HEV seven seater (Rs2.05 crore) Ex-Factory.
2- GWM Tank 500 PHEV five seater (Rs2.25 crore) Ex-Factory.
While the booking prices are as follows:
1- GWM Tank 500 HEV (Rs3.0 million)
2- GWM Tank 500 PHEV (Rs3.5 million)
Local assembly typically reduces customs duties and other taxes, allowing manufacturers to offer more competitive pricing. The introduction of a plug-in hybrid option is also likely to attract buyers looking for better fuel efficiency and lower running costs.
High price a key challenge
The Tank 500 HEV was first introduced in February 2024 as Sazgar’s flagship SUV. It entered a competitive market that includes several full-size and premium models. While the vehicle was well equipped, its imported status made it costly and limited its appeal to a small group of buyers.
The Tank 500 HEV carried heavy duties and taxes. This pushed its price to around Rs4.5 crore, placing it among the most expensive SUVs available in the country. The high price made it difficult for the model to compete, despite its strong specifications and hybrid powertrain.
To address this, Sazgar began planning a shift to local assembly. The company had signalled this change in late 2024, and the launch today confirms that the plan has moved forward.
Market impact
The local assembly of the Tank 500 HEV reflects a broader trend in Pakistan’s auto industry, where companies are turning to domestic production to manage costs and demand.
