Chocolate, fries, cold drinks banned in schools

school lunches

The United Arab Emirates has banned soft drinks, chocolates, and potato chips in school lunches altogether as a bid to promote better eating habits amongst students across the country. The decision was made by the UAE Ministry of Education in Dubai.

Promoting Healthy Habits

According to officials, the move is for students’ own benefit with the aim of encouraging their parents to provide nutritious meals and snacks for their kids in school lunches.

The ministry highlighted that the school has an active role to play in improving dietary practices of students as well as their general well-being.

Authorities believe that if healthy eating practices are being shaped at school, it will have a long-term impact on the lifestyle of the children.

Extended Restrictions

Apart from sugary drinks and junk food, the ministry has banned food items containing excessive sugar content, artificial colouring, and items like nuts, which trigger allergies.

The step is to decrease the health risks associated with sugar, such as obesity, diabetes, and severe allergic reactions among school children.

Officials said that restricting access to unhealthy food in the school setting is important to protecting the health of the students.

Strict Monitoring Measures

School administrations have been ordered to make sure they strictly follow the new requirements. Authorities have told schools to look out for the food sold in schools as well as foods that are brought to school.

Students’ lunchboxes may be checked so that prohibited items are not being brought into the school premises. The policy covers educational institutions equally.

Healthier Alternatives Promoted

The ministry has suggested to parents to keep some healthier options in the lunchboxes of their children. Recommended items include fresh fruits, low-fat milk, yogurt, and lightly baked items or foods which are roasted rather than fried snacks.

Officials believe these measures will help get nutrition habits established from an early age.

Commitment to Public Health

The initiative reflects the UAE’s general commitment to public health and child welfare. By removing unhealthy food options, and promoting healthier food options, the authorities hope to provide a safer, more conducive learning setting for children across the nation.
