The Perth Scorchers continued their good form dominating the Big Bash League with a six-wicket win over the Sydney Sixers on Sunday, chasing down 133 with 15 balls to spare. David Payne’s fiery spell set the tone early to put the final firmly in the control of Perth.
Batting first, the Sixers could only score 132 in the 20 overs. They had trouble in forging partnerships and their wickets tumbled at regular intervals.
The middle and lower order failed to give a good start, and the death overs gave little returns. Payne was exceptional claiming 3 key wickets for just 18 runs in his four overs.
Jye Richardson and Mahli Beardman were a great support for him and made sure the Sixers never gained any momentum.
Pursuing a meagre total, the Scorchers were calm and controlled. Mitchell Marsh held the innings solidly with an impressive score of 44 from just 43 balls giving them stability at the top. Finn Allen got into aggression early, scoring 36 off 22 balls, giving a perfect start to Perth.
The middle order struggled for a little, but Josh Inglis held off to finish on 29 off 26 balls. Cooper Connolly stayed with him to see the team home, unbeaten on 4. Sydney’s bowlers tried to put pressure on them, but the target was never too far away, and the Scorchers’ chase was never in serious doubt.
There was a roar from the crowd when David Payne was named Player of the Match. His destructive bowling had swung in Perth’s favour in the final.
With this win, the Scorchers strengthened their good position in the tournament. The Sixers, in the meanwhile, were left to ponder missed opportunities with the bat, with an inability to take the bat when needed. Perth’s classic efficiency, no drama just business was on full display in the final.
