The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province from September 13 to September 17, banning public gatherings of five or more people, rallies, processions and assemblies at public places, highways and open spaces.
The restrictions also prohibit the carrying or display of weapons in public places, and encouraging or inciting people to participate in unlawful gatherings has been banned.
However, the restrictions do not apply to wedding ceremonies, funeral prayers, burials, or gatherings at mosques and other places of worship. Courts, government institutions and officially permitted events are also exempt.
Law enforcement, intelligence, and security personnel performing official duties will also remain exempt from the restrictions.
According to the Punjab Home Department, the decision was taken in response to serious threats to public peace, security, and the lives and property of citizens.
Intelligence and law enforcement agencies have warned of possible terrorist attacks targeting public gatherings. Authorities said large crowds at rallies, public meetings, sit-ins, processions and demonstrations could become potential targets.
Law enforcement agencies had requested immediate measures to strengthen security and prevent possible attacks.
Following the security reports, the Home Secretary imposed the restrictions under Section 144(6) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898.
The Punjab government said protecting the lives and property of citizens remains its top priority.
The Punjab Home Department has issued a notification formally enforcing Section 144 across the province.
