In view of the security arrangements for Muharram-ul-Haram, Section 144 has been imposed across Punjab. All restrictions, except the ban on pillion riding, will remain in force from the 1st to the 10th of Muharram.
According to details, the Government of Punjab has imposed strict restrictions under Section 144 throughout the province to maintain law and order during Muharram-ul-Haram, promote religious harmony, and protect the lives and property of citizens.
The Punjab Home Department has issued formal orders and a notification in this regard, stating that Section 144 will remain in force from the 1st of Muharram until the 10th of Muharram-ul-Haram.
During the traditional processions and gatherings (Majalis) of Muharram-ul-Haram, no new innovations (new practices or changes in tradition) will be permitted.
In addition, provocative slogans, gestures that hurt the sentiments of different sects, and statements that promote sectarian or ethnic hatred will be completely prohibited.
Strict legal action will be taken against those who spread hateful material through social media or other means.
Furthermore, the display of all kinds of weapons and explosive materials without permission will be completely banned throughout the province.
The construction of any kind of defensive positions or bunkers on the rooftops of buildings located along procession routes will be prohibited.
Moreover, the accumulation of stones, bricks, bottles, or garbage along procession routes will not be allowed under any circumstances.
During mourning processions, sitting as spectators on shop platforms or on the rooftops of buildings will also be strictly prohibited.
The notification clearly states that the schedule for the ban on pillion riding will differ from the other restrictions.
The ban on pillion riding across Punjab will apply only on the 9th and 10th of Muharram-ul-Haram.
However, elderly people, women, children, and security personnel will be exempt from this restriction.
According to the spokesperson for the Punjab Home Department, the enforcement of Section 144 has been carried out solely to ensure law and order, as the protection of citizens’ lives and property is the government’s top priority.
The Punjab Home Secretary has directed the administration to widely publicise these restrictions through the media across the province, including Lahore, so that the general public remains informed about these regulations and any unpleasant situation can be avoided.
