UN Security Council condemns deadly terrorist attacks in Balochistan

Security Council Balochistan attacks

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has strongly condemned a series of terrorist attacks that took place in Pakistan’s Balochistan province, describing them as “heinous and cowardly”.

In a press release issued on February 3, 2026, the council said the attacks occurred on January 31, 2026, across multiple locations in the province and resulted in the deaths of 48 Pakistani nationals. Among those killed were 31 civilians, including five women and three children.

Condolences and solidarity with Pakistan

The statement was released by the council’s president, James Kariuki CMG of the United Kingdom (UK). Members of the Security Council expressed their deepest sympathy to the families of the victims and extended condolences to the government and people of Pakistan.

They also wished a full and speedy recovery to those injured in the attacks, acknowledging the human loss caused by the violence.

Claim of responsibility

According to the statement, the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for the attacks. The Security Council reiterated its position that terrorism, in all forms and manifestations, remains one of the most serious threats to international peace and security. The council said that acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of motivation or where they take place.

Security Council members stressed the importance of holding those responsible to account. This includes not only the attackers but also those who organise, finance or sponsor such acts. They urged all countries to cooperate with Pakistan in line with international law and relevant UN resolutions to ensure those involved are brought to justice.

Broader stance on terrorism

The council reaffirmed its commitment to combat terrorism while respecting international legal frameworks, including human rights, refugee law and humanitarian law. The statement underlined that efforts to address terrorism must be carried out in accordance with the UN Charter.

Pakistan has faced a series of security challenges in recent years, particularly in Balochistan. The latest attacks have renewed international attention on the security situation in the region and the wider fight against militancy.
