When will Shaban moon 2026 be sighted? SUPARCO predicts

The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) on Friday predicted that the first day of Shaban 1447 AH is likely to fall on January 21, 2026, adding that there is a low probability of moon sighting on January 19.

According to a SUPARCO press release, the new moon will be born at the point of conjunction at 12:52 AM. (PST) on January 19, 2026.

However, the chances of sighting the moon on the evening of January 19 are extremely low due to unfavourable astronomical conditions.

This means that the sky is expected to be either too “shaky” or too “dirty” to see stars and planets clearly.

Air pollution is often a significant factor in poor astronomical conditions.

SUPARCO stated that on January 19, the moon’s age will be around 17 hours and 36 minutes.

While the time difference between sunset and moonset in Pakistan’s coastal areas will be approximately 33 minutes.

This will make naked eye sighting of the moon unlikely.

Based on these astronomical parameters, there is a possibility of moon sighting on the evening of January 20. This will correspond to the 30th of Rajab.

As a result, Shaban is expected to begin on January 21, 2026.

The final decision regarding the start of the Islamic month will be made by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee of Pakistan, which will meet on Monday evening, January 19.

The meeting will be held to review moon sighting reports received from across the country.

Zonal and district Ruet-e-Hilal committees are also expected to convene for this purpose.

SUPARCO also noted that the Ministry of Science and Technology has introduced a moon sighting mobile application, Ruet, to assist in the process.

Shaban is the eighth month of the Islamic lunar calendar.

The 15th night of the month, known as Shab-e-Barat or Laylat al-Bara’ah.

It is widely observed with prayers and religious gatherings.
