‘Shahdara Dam’ to secure Islamabad’s water future

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is on a fast track to permanently address Islamabad’s water shortage by working on the mega project, Shahdara Dam.

The proposed Shahdara Dam is planned to store water over an area of 25 acres and will supply 10 million gallons of water per day to residents of Islamabad.

The detailed design phase of the project will begin immediately after the completion of its feasibility report, while the PC-1 will be submitted for approval shortly after its preparation.

These developments were shared during a meeting chaired by the Chairman of the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Chief Commissioner of Islamabad, Muhammad Ali Randhawa.

During the meeting, he directed that a formal survey be conducted by the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) before the acquisition of land for the dam.

While briefing, officials informed that the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has completed the feasibility study for the Shahdara Dam and has shared the complete report with CDA.

The feasibility report includes initial cost estimates for land acquisition, water conveyance systems, a water treatment plant, and other related components.

The meeting was also informed that work on the feasibility report for the proposed Dotara Dam is currently in progress. Chairman CDA emphasised that these projects will play a vital role in fulfilling the water requirements of the Federal Capital. He reiterated that ensuring an uninterrupted water supply for Islamabad remains one of the authority’s top priorities.
