The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) appointed Shaheen Shah Afridi as the new ODI captain following a meeting held in Islamabad earlier today.

The session was attended by white-ball head coach Mike Hesson, Director High Performance Aqib Javed, and members of the national selection committee.

Shaheen’s first assignment as Pakistan’s ODI skipper will be the three-match home series against South Africa, which is set to take place at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad from November 4 to 8.

The left-arm pacer is no stranger to leadership, having previously captained Pakistan’s T20 side during the five-match series against New Zealand in January 2024.

However, after Pakistan’s 4–1 series defeat, the captaincy was handed back to Babar Azam, who continued to lead the team until the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Before Shaheen’s appointment, Mohammad Rizwan had been leading Pakistan’s white-ball teams.

He captained the ODI squad in 20 matches, winning nine and losing 11, giving him a 45 per cent win rate.
