West Indies captain Shai Hope continued his impressive run on the tour of India, rewriting the record books with a historic performance in the fourth T20I in Hyderabad. After scoring two centuries in the ODI series, the right-handed batter maintained his outstanding form in the shortest format, becoming the first West Indies player to score three centuries in T20 internationals.
Hope’s latest century took him past former West Indies great Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis, who have two T20I centuries each. Among players from full-member nations, only Rohit Sharma, Glenn Maxwell, Suryakumar Yadav and Phil Salt have scored more T20I centuries than Hope, according to the reported rankings.
Hope equals Gayle’s record for most 50-plus scores
Hope reached his half-century off 28 balls during his remarkable innings, equalling Gayle’s record for the most 50-plus scores by a West Indies batter in T20 internationals.
Both players have registered 16 scores of 50 or more. However, their centuries and half-centuries are distributed differently: Gayle recorded two centuries and 14 fifties, while Hope has three centuries and 13 half-centuries.
The West Indies captain also became the second Caribbean batter to register three 50-plus scores in a bilateral T20I series, matching a feat previously achieved by Nicholas Pooran against India in 2022.
Furthermore, Hope became the fourth captain overall to record three 50-plus scores in a bilateral T20I series, joining India’s Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav, as well as Pakistan’s Sahibzada Farhan.
Hope’s second-fastest T20I century
The century in Hyderabad was Hope’s second-fastest in T20 internationals and the joint fifth-fastest by a West Indies batter, according to the reported statistics.
Earlier in the series, he had scored an unbeaten 102 off 45 balls, narrowly missing the West Indies record for the fastest T20I century held by Johnson Charles, who reached three figures in 39 balls.
Hope’s latest explosive innings helped West Indies post a formidable total of 247 runs in Hyderabad as they sought to level the five-match T20I series against India. His consistent performances across both formats have further strengthened his reputation as one of the West Indies’ key batters on the Indian tour.
