Pakistan’s star batter Shan Masood is likely to step down from test captaincy after a disappointing Test series whitewash against Bangladesh.
According to sources, Masood is under intense criticism due to both his batting form and leadership as captain. Reports revealed that resignation is being considered in the aftermath of the series defeat.
Masood, who mainly features in Test cricket with relatively infrequent appearances due to the format’s schedule, has faced growing criticism for his recent performances.
Earlier today, Bangladesh whitewashed Pakistan in the test series by 78 runs in the second Test at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
Chasing a huge target of 437, Pakistan were bowled out for 358, giving the hosts a big win and a series whitewash.
Resuming play on the fifth day after a brief rain delay, Mohammad Rizwan and Sajid Khan added crucial runs and built a valuable 50-plus partnership that helped Pakistan cross the 350 mark. However, their stand was broken by Taijul Islam, who dismissed Sajid Khan for 28 off 36 balls.
Shortly after, Pakistan suffered another setback when Shoriful Islam removed Mohammad Rizwan, who played a brilliant knock of 94 off 166 deliveries, featuring 10 boundaries. Taijul Islam further strengthened Bangladesh’s grip by dismissing Khurram Shahzad for a duck, wrapping up Pakistan’s innings.
Pakistan’s chase had begun poorly with both openers dismissed early. Babar Azam (47) and skipper Shan Masood (71) tried to rebuild the innings with a steady partnership, taking the side past 100. However, regular wickets kept halting their progress.
Saud Shakeel fell cheaply for six, while Babar and later Shan Masood were also dismissed, leaving Pakistan under pressure at 154-4. Despite this, Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha stitched together a fighting 134-run stand to revive hopes and push Pakistan beyond 200.
